1941 (5 Oct) Third Reich, Germany, Censored Letter of one of the First Prisoner (No 998) from Auschwitz Concentration Camp, Censorship Postmark, More Details in Description

Germany / WWII Occupations (1939-1945)

This historical correspondence consists of the front and back of an official stationery form from the Auschwitz Concentration Camp, dated October 5, 1941. The document was sent by a Polish political prisoner to his family under strict camp censorship rules.

The front page contains pre-printed camp regulations on the left and handwritten personal details on the right.
Prisoner Identity:Name: Mieczysław Jakubowski
Date of Birth: April 24, 1917
Prisoner Number: 998

Prisoner numbers under 1,000 belong to the earliest inmates of Auschwitz. Jakubowski arrived during the very first mass transports of Polish political prisoners from Tarnów in June 1940. Surviving until October 1941 was rare, as these early prisoners endured the brutal initial construction phase of the camp.
The printed text outlines highly restrictive communication laws, including a limit of two letters or cards per month, a strict 15-line limit per page, an absolute ban on packages, and no visitation rights.

The back page contains the handwritten letter written in grammatically flawed German, which was mandatory so that Nazi censors could read it. It features a prominent red stamp reading "Postzensurstelle / K. L. Auschwitz" (Mail Censorship Office / Auschwitz Concentration Camp).

The prisoner acknowledges receiving a previous letter but notes that he did not receive the money allowance for that month.
He expresses deep anxiety and sorrow because he has not received any news from a person named Janus. He begs his father to investigate the situation, fearing that her silence means something bad has happened.
