1923 (Nov. 11) Germany: Formular Postal Card used within Germany's Rhineland from Frankenthal to Ludwigshafen franked with 40m Numeral strip of five, 200m single and 500,000,000m single all tied by 'Frankenthal' postmatks. Handwritten message on reverse in German

Germany / Covers & Postcards

Due to the well known German inflation, postal rates changed more than 14 times in 1923, resulting in well over 100 new stamps. Total franking 500,000,400 marks, which does not equate to any postcard rate. It appears that the sender initially franked the card for the 400m rate, which lasted 23 days in August. By the time he actually mailed it in November, the rate had ballooned to 500,000,000 marks, a rate that lasted only 7 days.

With all that German inflation, conditions were ideal for use of Formular cards, but this is one of the few examples I have seen, and probably very rare 're-franking' due to a rate change.
