1948 (June 11) Postwar Occupation of Germany, Unsealed Printed-Matter cover from Soviet-Occupied Saxony to Halle franked with 6pf Worker tied by 'Leipzig - Achtet auf den Kartofelkäfer!' slogan roller post- mark

Germany / Covers & Postcards

The postmark's slogan translates as 'Watch Out For the Colorado Potato Beetle'. Although the insect had established itself throughout Europe during the Second World War, soon after that, the Colorado Potato Beetle had infested nearly half of all the potato fields in Soviet-Occupied Germany.

In a very early example of Cold War propaganda, the Soviet Zone's government claimed that the beetles had been dropped by American planes.
