1941 (23 Jul) Third Reich, Germany, Censored Cover with Letter from Dachau Concentration Camp to Warsaw (Poland), Censorship Postmark, More Details in Description

Germany / WWII Occupations (1939-1945)

This document is an original, complete German-language letter sent by a Polish prisoner (23 Jul 1941) from the Dachau Concentration Camp (KL Dachau 3 K). It was heavily regulated by camp regulations and subject to strict German censorship.

The sender was Mieczysław Pyliński, who has the prisoner Number 12346, located in camp block 12/3
The recipient was his mother, Mrs. Julie Pylinska, residing at Różanastrasse 7/4 in Warsaw, Poland.

The envelope has a postmark from the town of Dachau over a red 12-Pfennig German Reich stamp featuring Adolf Hitler.
The letter and the envelope feature an official purple ink stamp on the back reading: "Postzensurstelle K. L. Dachau geprüft" (Checked by the Mail Censorship Office of Dachau Concentration Camp).
The left margin of the envelope contains the camp commander's official regulations, strictly limiting prisoners to sending or receiving only two letters/cards per month, forcing them to write in German, and threatening immediate confiscation for any rule violations.

The letter is dated July 20, 1941, and is written in broken but clear German, which was mandatory for censorship purposes.
Mietek reassures his parents that he is healthy ("Gott sei Dank, gesund"). Such generic statements were standard, as prisoners were strictly forbidden from describing the harsh realities of the camp. He confirms the receipt of a 30 Reichsmark (RM) money order sent by his parents on July 9, for which he thanks them. In Dachau, prisoners were allowed to receive limited funds to buy basic items at the camp canteen.
