1944 (14 Oct) Third Reich, Germany, Censored Complete Letter from Buchenwald Concentration Camp to Rokitzan Bohemia and Moravia, Censorship Postmarks, More Details in Description

Germany / WWII Occupations (1939-1945)

This lot consist of the front and back of an official, censored concentration camp letter sheet along with its corresponding cover. The letter was sent from the Weimar-Buchenwald concentration camp to Rokitzan in the German-occupied Czech territory Bohemia and Moravia.

The letter was sent by the Prisoner Franz Lier, registered as a political prisoner or "protective custody prisoner".
His exceptionally low prisoner number 1883 indicates that he was deported to Buchenwald very early in the camp's history, long before the massive wartime influx.

Recipient was his wife, Anna Lierová

Franz Lier confirms the receipt of several food and supply packages sent by his family throughout the previous month. He lists the contents, which include smoked meat, sugar, cake, macaroni, eggs, and fish oil. These nutrient-dense items were vital for a prisoner's survival against starvation.

The letter highlights the strict, omnipresent Nazi camp bureaucracy. The front page features the red rules of the camp commandant, stating that prisoners were strictly limited in how many letters they could send per month, that photos were banned, and that unclear handwriting would lead to immediate destruction of the mail. The cover bears the blue stamp of a mail censor (Postprüfer 3), proving the letter was screened by the SS before release.

Provenance: Ex Werbizky.
