This complete letter is a rare piece of prisoner-of-war postal history

The letter was written by Maria Dittmann, postmarked in Euskirchen (Germany) on September 7, 1944, and reviewed by a post-war US tracking bureau on July 13, 1945.
It was addressed to her husband, Karl-Heinz Dittmann, a German Master Sergeant (Wachtmeister), who was held at Prisoner of War Camp No. XXVIII in Ksar-es-Souk, French Morocco.
The envelope was sealed by the German High Command (OKW) censor in Berlin. However, due to shifting frontlines in late 1944, it likely never reached Morocco. In July 1945, the US Army Prisoner of War Information Bureau (PWIB) stamped it while tracking missing soldiers. Finding "No Record" of him at that station, the letter was eventually returned to Germany as undeliverable.

Inside the letter Maria expresses a deep, aching loneliness that grows heavier every Sunday. She admits that she prefers being alone and struggles to go out among people. By November 1944, it will mark exactly two years since their painful separation. She vividly recalls the exact moment of their farewell on November 15, 1942, at 6:30 PM.
