An official wartime telegram issued by the "Deutsche Post Osten" (German Post East) in occupied Poland (Generalgouvernement). from March 16, 1942.
Recipient was Stefania Frankiewicz in Radoszyce, Poland.
The message was a brief, chilling official notice stating: "Ehemann im Konzentrationslager Auschwitz verstorben" ("Husband deceased in Auschwitz concentration camp"), signed by the camp "Kommandant" (Commandant).

Such official death notifications were typically sent only to the families of non-Jewish, political prisoners (such as Polish nationals). Millions of Jewish victims and Soviet prisoners of war were murdered without any bureaucratic notification to their relatives.
These documents are exceptionally rare today because the SS systematically destroyed camp archives at the end of the war, and fragile wartime paper rarely survived the turmoil of the German occupation and the post-war era.
Surviving specimens are almost exclusively held in highly protected historical archives, such as the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum or the Arolsen Archives.
